A Cambridge landlord has been fined £10,000 and ordered to pay full costs of £2,500 for failing to remove hazards from an unsafe HMO in the city.

Maggiore Coppola was fined for failing to comply with an improvement notice. He pleaded guilty to all four offences under Housing Act 2004 and a further offence under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976.

Cambridge council's environmental health officers carried out inspections of the HMO and found that the property was unsafe due to the risk of fire and smoke spreading at the property. The kitchen and bathroom were also inadequate for the number of people living there.

Although Coppola was given time to complete the required works he failed to do so and the council served an improvement notice on him requiring him to complete the works by October 2013. Again, Coppola failed to complete these works and continued to rent out the unsafe property.

The council says the prosecution represents part of our ongoing work to improve the private rented sector and drive up standards and a spokesman said there was no place in Cambridge for rogue and unscrupulous landlords.
