A landlord has been hit with a £1,000 fine for each of 12 safety and welfare offences, and has to pay costs of £3,000, taking his total bill to £15,000.

Michael Scholes, of Batley in Yorkshire, did not attent Leeds Magistrates' Court but was convicted in his absence after the court heard he repeatedly failed to carry out upgrade works relating to fire safety, heating and kitchen facilities at the large bedsit property in Leeds, which he was operating as a House in Multiple Occupation.

The Spenborough Guardian local newspaper reports that the council issued a request for work to be done for his tenants' safety, but this had been ignored.

A Leeds council spokesman says that in the course of inspections over several years [the landlord] failed to deal with fire safety contraventions including the fire alarm system being of an inadequate specification and sound level and fire doors that were either damaged or not compliant.

Scholes also failed in his duty to produce certification relating to the electrical safety of the property.
