Some 32 per cent of landlords in the UK - approximately 500,000 - say they have experienced rent arrears in the last 12 months, says the National Landlords' Association.

The research shows that a typical landlord faces £1,649 of outstanding rent, totalling £850m worth of rent arrears across the UK. The findings also show that 22 per cent of landlords in the UK - approximately 300,000 - are worried that their tenants won't be able to keep up rental payments over the next year.

The research supports the launch of the NLA's latest campaign called Rent, Risk, Resolve., which aims to highlight four of the biggest risks facing landlords - rent arrears, rising interest rates, local landlord licensing and regulation, and the introduction of rent controls.

Regardless of the size of your portfolio the potential impact of these risks can be devastating on both the business and personal life says NLA chairman, Carolyn Uphill.

The first focus of the NLA's campaign will be the risk of rent arrears. The NLA has produced a free guide to support landlords to deal with the problem.

KB I could not agree more - the NLA seem to have taken a leaf from Shelter's book when quoting statistics. Good Lord if a third of our Landlords suffered from rent arrears this year it would equate to over 300 and we would be in serious trouble.

It seems to me that part of the problem with these spanners quoting statistics is they do not differentiate between private Landlords and letting agents when publishing statistics.

32%! Are you kidding me! Who comes up with these stats How many people were surveyed before they used this as a justifiable national statistic
Less than 1% of our L\ndlords had rent arrears this year. If you struggle to manage your properties, use a professional agent. Their comprehensive vetting procedures will weed out the bad eggs and will be there to help should things go wrong. Also, with rent warranty and legal cover very reasonable, why arent the 0.5m Landlords doing more to protect themselves
Sorry for the rant, but getting slightly fed up with articles quoting ridiculous stats- if you're going to quote silly stats & percentages then at least quantify it wth the number surveyed.
