From January 1 all landlords with properties in the Dr Cymru Welsh Water and Dee Valley Water authority areas will become jointly liable for tenants' water debt if they do not share tenant information with their water company.

The Association of Residential Letting Agents - which is alerting agents and landlords to the regulations which come into effect through the Water Industry Act - says the affected properties are in Wales, Cheshire, Herefordshire, Shropshire and Gloucestershire.

Landlords must provide their tenant's full name, date of birth, the start date for the tenancy and the property address. This information must be supplied by January 21 for existing occupants and for new occupants within 21 days of the start of their tenancy.

Failure to provide the information will result in joint liability for water supply and sewerage charges.

ARLA says the easiest way for landlords or their agents to meet the obligations of the scheme is through submitting details via the Landlord Tenant Address Portal on www.landlordtap.com.
