A survey of over 1,800 landlords reveals that 40 per cent of them are considering increasing rents in 2015.

Some 27 per cent of the 1,874 landlords questioned last month by Spareroom.co.uk say they will probably increase rents by over three per cent.

The website claims that the average UK-wide rent for a double room in shared accommodation has risen by eight per cent in the past year to £546 per month - that's up from £505 the previous year.

In London, the average room rent has increased by four per cent to £704 per month, up from £676 a year ago.
