The housing chief of a Labour-controlled local authority says the mandatory redress scheme for lettings agents will be nothing to prevent rogue landlords or so-called revenge evictions'.

Reading's lead councillor for housing, Richard Davies, has told his council colleagues that council officers were currently making sure letting and managing agents operating within the borough were registered with one of the three approved redress regimes.

But he added that because the schemes do not cover poor landlords - only the agents who act on their behalf and [do] nothing to address the problem of revenge evictions.

Davies claims Reading has a problem with revenge evictionswhere the power lies with the landlords [who] are confident they will relet their property if they want to evict their tenant.
