The National Federation of ALMOs - arm's length management organisations - has renewed its call for political parties to back making Universal Credit payments direct to landlords a choice for tenants, not for government or councils.

The coalition government is shortly expected to announce the roll out of Universal Credit, which will replace six existing income-based benefits with one single payment delivered by the Department of Work and Pensions.

The NFA says its decision to leave the choice to tenants is based on its canvassing the view of many renters who prefer to have the housing element of Universal Credit paid directly to their landlord to ensure that the rent is paid. They can then manage the rest of their money after that priority payment,

The NFA believes that the Department of Work and Pensions needs to provide additional resources to help manage the programme as it rolls out, primarily to aid the relationship between tenants and landlords and ensure tenants aren't left with large rent arrears and other financial problems due to the switch over.
