A council has fined four landlords £13,500 plus costs in a clampdown on those who allegedly fail to manage and licence properties or comply with licence conditions.

Warwick district council says the first of the landlords, Monika Baty of Royal Leamington Spa, pleaded guilty to having more people in the property than the Licence permitted and was fined £2,500 plus costs. It claims there were 10 residents in the HMO licenced for six.

Delwar King pleaded guilty to failure to licence his property in Royal Leamington Spa other offences relating to repairs and management of the house. Hewas fined £5,000 plus costs.

Hardip Singh Hothi pleaded guilty to failure to licence a property in Saltisford, Warwick and was fined £3,500 plus costs. His offence was spotted when the fire brigade were called to the property last year, discovering it was in fact an HMO.

Finally Lakbir Atwal pleaded guilty to failing to licence a property in Royal Leamington Spa - despite numerous reminders according to the council - and was fined £2,500 plus costs.

An authority spokesman says: Officers will not hesitate to enforce the law where tenant's health and safety is at risk and landlords blatantly disregard the law. The Private Sector Housing Team works hard to safeguard vulnerable tenants.
