A family ordered to pay their landlord £3,500 in owed rent have offered to pay in weekly installments - lasting an estimated 37 years.

Zena and Derek Smith claim they ran up extensive bills themselves because the central heating did not work in their property in Colchster, Essex; as a result, they withheld rent from their landlords.

A court hearing in March culminated in the family being ordered to pay the arrears, even though the judge agreed with their contention that the property was sub-standard.

The landlord is believed to have rejected the offer but Zena Smith is quoted in a local newspaper as saying that her family completed the appropriate means forms and calculated that, with their income and outgoings, they could afford only £2 per week.

The family has now moved to another property.
