People looking for rooms in shared houses care less about the type of property or where it is than they do about the people they would be living with.

According to flatshare website SpareRoom, almost four in ten (39%) total searches relate to the lifestyle, hobbies or interests of potential flatmates, while almost a third (31%) of all searches are related to their nationality or religion. Another 3% relate to their professions.

By contrast, just over a quarter (27%) of searches are based on property type.

It means that popular search criteria are ‘vegetarian’, ‘music’, ‘cycling’ or ‘Christian’, rather than ‘ensuite’ or ‘studio’.

However, the website also says that there have been some unusual search terms used on its site over the last year: ‘food included’, ‘nudist’ and, as a sign of the times, ‘no deposit’.
