When we're struggling with something, it's not always natural to turn to others for help. But, helping each other is all part of the giving and receiving that makes up good working relationships.

Roy Fuller Managing Director at Everything Lettings says: Getting help sounds simple. But it's not always easy to do, as sometimes we stand in our own way without realizing it and certain beliefs or ways of thinking can make it hard to see opportunities for help.

From our own experiences at Everything Lettings we have given some examples of the kinds of attitudes that can stand in the way and ideas on how to get past them.

Obstacle 1: Believing That Needing Help within your business is a Sign of Weakness
Asking for help shows maturity and confidence to your staff. It's a sign of strength, not weakness. You know what you and your business needs and you're not afraid to reach out for it.

For example, instead of thinking: I will leave my staff to deal with a property maintenance issue for one of our more demanding Landlords.
Change it to: I'll show my staff how committed I am to the team and how hard I practice what I preach by asking Everything Lettings to attend and deal with it for me.

Obstacle 2: Thinking You Don't Need Help or Support
Everyone needs help now and then. No one can or should handle everything alone. Accepting help can strengthen your business and that of your staff. After all doesn't everyone feel good when they can help and support someone!

For example, instead of thinking: I'd really like to find out how Katy is coping with booking in our periodic electrical safety reports, but she's so busy I'm sure she doesn't have time to talk to me .
Change it to: I'll ask Katy if she has time to get all the reports booked in, I can let her know how much her hard work means to the company but maybe if some are not booked in I can advise her to speak with Everything Lettings.

Be choosy about who you ask to help, though. For example place your work with someone who listens and understands your business, someone who can add valve to your business and get the job done right first time.

Obstacle 3: Not Speaking Up to Ask for Help
Sometimes you're lucky enough to have people in your business who see what the business needs and offers to help before asked. Usually it's manager or junior member of staff that wants to progress and impress. But sometimes you won't have this and will need help, and have to ask. Everything Lettings believe: The best approach is to be clear and direct with us, like saying, "I'm having trouble with this. Can you help me"

For example, instead of thinking: I'm won't call Everything Lettings I have spoken to them in the past I don't have an account with them and they already probably think I'm ignoring them from past enquiries

Change it to: I am going to call Everything Lettings, they have loads of experience in these matters, and I'll ask them to quote for works before attending. I can then decide what I want to do.

Obstacle 4: Waiting for Someone Else to Make the First Move
It's not always easy within your business to see when help is needed. Maybe your staff are putting on a cheerful face to mask the problem or giving off a vibe that they don't need help. Don't wait for someone else to notice what your business needs. Ask.

For example, instead of thinking: I don't understand why the tenants from 18 Bushels keep ringing, ask Tom what the issue is and remind him he could get help by asking Everything Lettings

Obstacle 5: Giving Up Too Easily
If help doesn't get us what we expect right away, it's tempting to give up. But getting help takes ongoing effort. It might take multiple attempts.

For example, instead of thinking: You'd think the local contractor you always use would know right away what the best option for my business is! He's supposed to have all this experience, but now that I've tried someone else I wonder if it's all just been too easy to reply on him in the past.

Change it to: The first option for my business should always be reliability, to quality against cost! After working with Everything Lettings I was not disappointed. I know it will probably take some time for my staff to get to know new processes and people but I can see this could be the best fit. I'll give them a few more jobs before I make a decision. I'll also try harder to share why I am making this decision and not expect my staff to read my mind.

Now you can see why Everything Lettings say: Asking for Help Is Important
None of us can go it alone. The people who believe in us remind us that we have what it takes, that we matter, and make a difference. But sometimes we just have to reach out and ask for that help.

Because it can be hard to reach out for help, Everything Lettings don't hesitate to reach out and offer support and help to businesses that needs it. Giving and receiving help are great life skills to learn. They have helped us learn character qualities like empathy, as well as understand how other people's business work.
