Agents in Croydon are defending the erection of To Let and For Sale boards outside an apartment block in the area after a series of 'saw attacks' by a resident who says he has permission to cut the boards down to size.

Matthew Hassall of Lower Addiscombe Road, Croydon, claims to have the agreement of housing association Circle 33 to remove some boards and lop the top off others; both Streets Ahead and Barnard Marcus agencies are affected but insist they have legal signs in legal locations.

Hassall is reported by the Croydon Advertiser newspaper to have lived in the block for seven years but the signs have been prolific for the past five years.

Hassall says he has the support of fellow-residents and told the newspaper: "I have tested my saw and it cuts very well."

But a spokesman for Barnard Marcus says: "Strictly speaking he has no right to remove or damage or dispose of the boards that are the property of Barnard Marcus. We will now have to cover the cost of buying new boards and posts to replace them."

The resident has reported the signs to Croydon Council but the authority has taken no action against the boards - implicitly suggesting they are legal.

This action is trespass and damage to property (the board) and therefor illegal. He should be prosecuted and fined.

We put boards up at all properties we let or sell, have let or sold (with the landlord/vendors permission).

If another resident in the block or the management agent/freeholder asks us to remove them, we do.

We have had boards vandalised and as Sceptical as always says, They are not cheap to replace!!

And people wonder why we charge what we do When lunatics with saws go around destroying boards that are 10-15 each (plus cost of erection) it soon adds up.
