There is uproar in Brighton as a result of students being let rooms in an HMO - despite the property’s owners being told in June to stop letting the building.
The Brighton and Hove News reports that owner Donald Rayward and his wife were first told by the local council to stop renting a property in the town as a house of multiple occupation back in August 2014, a decision upheld by a planning inspector this June.
However, seven student tenants moved in - unaware of the situation - last month, and are paying a reported £3,332 a month. They now apparently face eviction as if they remain.
Now the owners’ company, Millhouse Enterprises, has submitted a new application to turn the property into an HMO, reducing the number of occupants from seven to six – which, the newspaper notes, puts it into a different planning class.
A planning consultant’s letter submitted in support of the application says “the house is as likely to be occupied by young professionals or nurses from the nearby hospital as it is students. There is no evidence that the occupation of the house by unrelated individuals causes any visual or other harm to the area.”
