Rents in Britain went up by an average of 2.5 per cent over the last year, the fastest rise for two-and-a-half years, according to the government's Office for National Statistics.
The largest increase was in London, where rents rose by 3.8 per cent in the year to the end of June. Excluding London, rents across England rose by 1.7 per cent on average.
The figures are classified as experimental by the ONS - the office is testing these quarterly results, which began earlier this year - but they show rents rose 2.1 per cent in Scotland and 0.8 per cent in Wales.
Over the same period general inflation, as measured by the Consumer Prices Index, was running at zero.
