The BBC is claiming that vulnerable families are being exploited by rogue landlords in Glasgow – including in the constituency for which SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon is a Member of the Scottish Parliament.

The report – some of which you can read about here – names five individuals which it calls ‘rogue landlords’. Some have been struck off a local authority register as being fit to be private landlords and one is described as being wanted by the FBI connected with alleged fraud.

The investigation also highlights a number of properties said to be in very poor condition, but still being let out to tenants – some of which, in addition, have allegedly had their deposits stolen.

In some cases, some landlords are described as taking over derelict properties, let it out illegally including taking substantial up-front deposits, and then neglecting to improve the properties. One landlord is said to be the subject of 17 trading standards cases.

The police has been informed by the BBC and is investigating those landlords struck off local registers but still apparently letting homes to tenants.
