High-profile opponent of agents' fees is to speak at ARLA conference

Vicky Spratt - whose blogging to highlight the various fees charged to tenants by letting agents triggered a campaign to get them banned - is to speak at next year’s Association of Residential Letting Agents conference.

Spratt is features editor of the online publication Debrief and secured over 250,000 signatures for her Make Renting Fair petition earlier this year. She is to be a panellist at a debate on fees at the conference which takes place on March 28 at the ExCel conference centre in London’s Docklands.

“I have paid as little as £80 and as much as £552 in agency fees on different fees. How is it possible that fees can vary so much from agency to agency? It’s a rip-off and the agents are getting away with it, all the way to the bank,” wrote Spratt earlier this year.

Keynote speakers are former Conservative party leader William Hague and ex-BBC business and economics editor Robert Peston. Hague has now retired from politics, and Peston is currently ITV’s political editor.

“The conference will be packed with vital information and updates and is a great opportunity for visitors and delegates to seek out new innovations, products and services for their businesses. This is our second year at ExCel, and last year the conference attracted in excess of 900 delegates, a record number” explains Nik Madan, ARLA president.

Actually think this is a great move. This is a movement that got traction very quickly showing just how motivated Tenants were to act on this. Agents around the country should get the opportunity to better understand the frustration of our user base to give a service in line with expectations. Fact is, this never would have happened if lots of agents had gotten greedy and charged silly fees.
