Cleaning problems lie behind 60% of tenancy deposit disputes - claim

Poor cleaning leads to some 60 per cent of the 36,000 deposit disputes referred for adjudication each year according to tenancy support company Property Principles.

It says the number of cleaning disputes rising by 25% in just one year, between 2014 and 2015, with the average cost of the cleaning problem coming in at £220 per property

Property Principles - which is selling a video to demonstrate what it calls the ‘benchmark’ cleaning level which should be maintained in all private rental properties by tenants, before handing it back to agents or landlords - says it is in the interest of agents and landlords to encourage tenants to learn the need and skills for proper cleaning to avoid extending void periods while cleaners are called in between tenancies.

“Large sums of money can be deducted perfectly correctly from a deposit if a rental property has not been cleaned to the standards expected.  We aim to show not only how easy it is for tenants to get it right but how easy it is to get it wrong and so leave a costly mistake behind” says Joanna White, managing director of Property Principles.
