A Twitter campaign has been launched under the hashtag ventyourrent to expose what its users claim are the “rip off” rent levels in the capital.
Users post photographs of themselves holding up handwritten or printed notices stating their rent and the part of the capital in which they live.
Some posters add notes about the apparent conditions of their properties or their experiences with letting agents, landlords or contractors.
One Brixton poster says: “Worst renting experience - lettings agent broke the lock, locking me out, immediately before closing for a week over Christmas.”
Another poster claims: “1 week’s notice before decorators started work, 2 months living in a building site, £0 discount, 30% rent rise after.”
A third poster states: “Moved in in January, to find no beds, heating or curtains. Plants were growing through the kitchen floor. £600pcm, SW17 #ventyourrent.”
The campaign is the brainchild of pressure group Generation Rent, which has urged fed-up renters to tell their stories using the hashtag.
