Shock survey claims 1.5m deposits 'not in any protection scheme'

A comparison website claims that over 1.5m tenants know their landlord has not placed their deposits into a government-backed deposit protection scheme.

The startling figure comes from Comparethemarket which claims that despite the legal obligation for landlords to put deposits into schemes such as the DPS, many tenants say they know this has not been done.

Meanwhile a fifth of tenants claim that they do not have a contract with their landlord, while a similar proportion claim to have had money taken from their deposit when leaving a property.

The research also suggests that some landlords can be slow to respond to renter requests, with almost one third reporting that they need to chase their landlord when a problem requires fixing. A further 12 per cent claim that they have to make repeated efforts before receiving a response.

Almost one in 10 say that it can take between a fortnight and a month for an issue at their property to be resolved.

The survey was conducted last month amongst 1,000 UK adult private tenants.

I'm interested to Know, HOW those tenants ' KNOW ' their deposits were not protected. ?
Is it that they cannot recall a document or being informed where their deposit was protected ?

Needs a little more explanation to be anywhere Near a reliable statement of fact !

agreed. tenants are hardly the reliable source considering the amount of unpaid rent and damages to property caused by them. The recent changes in law to protect the tenants only encourage rouge tenants to be on the increase whether its students professionals or families. They know they get away with it because they only have to lie and voila, the law is on their side. The politicians have no clue the can of worms they are opening onto the economy and the kind of attitude and lack of responsibility to pay for what they use eg utility bills like gas water electricity. why? they do it anyway and to be more protected by the law so that they do not have make any law to make them pay .
