Agent arrested on fraud and theft charges after media probe

A lettings agency owner in Norfolk has been arrested on suspicion of fraud and theft following a newspaper probe.

Earlier this year the Eastern Daily Press investigated eHomes, an agency in Swaffham that has in the interim closed down.

The EDP reported that landlords had allegedly not been paid rent and tenants’ deposits had not been secured in protection schemes as required by law. Some 40 people and groups, including a landlord recovering from cancer and a Methodist church, claimed they were owed money by eHomes.

At that time the firm’s only director and sole shareholder, Victoria Steele was reported to have gone abroad.

Now the EDP says 43-year-old Steele has been arrested.

A police spokesperson told the publication: “I can confirm a woman, aged in her 40s, was arrested in September 2018 on suspicion of fraud and theft offences. She was released under investigation pending further enquiries. The investigation is ongoing.”
