Letting agents' fees ban looks set to be implemented soon in Wales

The Welsh Government’s housing minister has tweeted that the results of a formal consultation process on a ban on agents’ fees levied on tenants adds weight to the introduction of such a measure.

Rebecca Evans has tweeted: “More than half of those who responded to our consultation support banning fees charged to tenants in the private rented sector. ... I’ve already announced I intend to bring forward a Bill which bans fees in the private rented sector: these consultation findings add to the evidence that action is needed ...”

In December Letting Agent Today reported that the Welsh Government had confirmed a ban would be introduced - this new statement by the housing minister suggests it may be sooner rather than later.

Over 680 responses were received by the government when the consultation closed last September.

The results, just announced, reveal:

- some 62 per cent of tenants claimed that fees affected their ability to move into a rented property;

- 86 per cent said fees affected their decision to use an agent;

- some 61 per cent of landlords said they did not know if or what tenants were charged by the agents they used.
