Trading Standards to give evidence to MPs over Draft Tenants' Fees Bill

The sittings of the select committee looking into government proposals to ban letting agents’ fees levied on tenants resume this week - with the Chartered Trading Standards Institute amongst the first giving evidence.

On Wednesday morning the Housing, Communities, and Local Government select committee will hear from Alison Farrar, the lead officer at the Chartered Trading Standards Institute.

Others giving evidence include members of Wandsworth, Bournemouth and Boston councils, the Chartered Institute of Housing and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health.

The DHCLG select committee’s investigations are called “pre-legislative scrutiny” and take place ahead of the full Commons debating the Draft Tenants’ Fees Bill.

There have already been several oral evidence sessions with contributions from, amongst others, ARLA, NALS and landlord bodies.

The MPs are assessing whether the Bill is the best way to deliver the government's stated objective of 'a fairer, more competitive, and more affordable lettings market where tenants have greater clarity and control over what they will pay and where the landlord is the primary customer of the letting agent.'

The government has already announced that the ban itself will not come into effect before spring next year.
