ARLA blasts government threat to end freedom of movement on October 31

The Association of Residential Letting Agents made a short sharp attack on the government last night, over freedom of movement and Brexit. 

Yesterday the government appeared to go back on earlier assurances on freedom of movement, saying that the EU's free movement rules would end immediately at the end of October if there was a No Deal Brexit.

Theresa May had considered phasing out the rules if the UK leaves the EU without an agreement, but those plans have now appear to have been dropped without consultation with the EU; the change would affect the rights of EU citizens who arrive in the UK from November 1 onwards.

Last evening David Cox, ARLA chief executive, blasted the U-turn, saying: “As recently as April, government committed to continuing with current arrangements around Right to Rent for EU citizens. Planned transition is vital in order to allow practical Brexit arrangements for housing and it is essential that sufficient time is allowed for moving to any new system.

"To move the goalposts at this stage will cause unnecessary distress and uncertainty to all those affected. Tenants, landlords and agents must not be left in limbo, arrangements must be clear and transparent for all parties.”

    A risky strategy based on the fines or even imprisonment that could occur if failing to comply with RTR regulations!
    I would NOT risk things and would adapt my tenant sourcing.
    That inevitably means only EU Nationals that have the Home Office Settled paperwork or the Right to Settle.
    Without that no EU national will be renting ANY of my properties.
    All LL should encourage their EU tenants to apply NOW for Settled status.
    Inevitably this will make life a lot harder for LL who will naturally start defaulting to British Nationals as tenants who are guaranteed to have the RTR.
