Typical rental deposit up only 5% in six years - claim

There’s a claim this morning that the average rent in the UK has increased only five per cent since 2014.

Research by a deposit alternative operator, Ome, says the typical rent has risen to £1,139 now from £1,088 six years ago - a rise of just five per cent.

The operator says that contrasts more than favourably with the increasing costs of household services such as a Sky or Virgin TV package, or the surge in house prices - up 24 per cent on average over the same period.

Other items that have increased at a greater rate than tenancy deposits in the last five years are car insurance (up 15.3 per cent), the price of gold (10 per cent), a pint of beer (up 10 per cent) and even the cost of a cinema ticket (six per cent more now).
