Agents can refer struggling tenants to independent advice helpline

Letting agents and landlords in Wales can now direct struggling tenants to a new independent advice service.

The Private Rented Sector Helpline is run by Citizens Advice Cymru and is a free, confidential, independent service helping tenants struggling with debt and uncertain of their benefit entitlements

The service is being funded by the Welsh Government which “recognises the support that many landlords and letting agents are already offering tenants”. The service also has the support of the National Residential Landlords Association.

Citizens Advice Cymru says if tenants are having problems because of the pandemic, there are:

- conversations they can have with their landlord to end a tenancy, get repairs done or deal with rent increases;

- steps they can take if they’re struggling to pay their rent;

- temporary new rules their landlord must follow if they want to get them to leave or evicted;

- ways to get help if they’re homeless or can’t keep living in their homes.

The service is open weekdays from 0900 to 1700 and can be accessed by calling 0300 330 2177.
