Landlords reminded of responsibilities amid Gas Safety Week

Todays other news

Landlords are being reminded of their responsibilities for gas safety checks on properties being rented to tenants.

Gas Safety Week runs from 13 to 18 September and aims to raise awareness of gas safety and the importance of taking care of gas appliances.

One in six homes have a dangerous gas appliance, according to the Gas Safe Register.

Landlords are being reminded that gas appliances need to be checked every five years by a registered engineer.

Boiler manufacturer Ideal Heating has warned that ventilation around appliances must never be blocked and checks should be made to spot yellow rather than the usual blue flames and any staining or soot build up that could signal problems.

The company also recommends getting and regularly testing a carbon monoxide detector

Elizabeth Wilkinson, product manager at Ideal Heating, said: “It is vital that homeowners, landlords and tenants understand the simple steps they can take to ensure gas appliances are installed and maintained safely and correctly.

“We would encourage all our customers to take a moment to recap on key points around gas safety.”
