The Welsh Government has revealed that it hasn’t had time to evaluate its tenant fee ban due to the pandemic.

Tenant fees were banned in Wales in September 2019 and holding deposits were capped at no more than one week’s rent.

But unlike in England, there is no cap on security deposits.

The Welsh Government has admitted in response to a freedom of information request that its formal evaluation of the changes has been delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Its response said: “The intention was to monitor the impact of the Renting Homes (Fees etc.) (Wales) Act 2019, including on the size of tenancy deposits, and any effect on rent payments, as part of a formal evaluation of the overall implementation of the Act.

“This work has been put on hold, to enable us to focus on the immediate challenges faced as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic.”
