Pets in lettings properties - key topic at today’s ARLA webinar

The controversial subject of pets in private rental properties is likely to be the chief point of debate at a webinar today for ARLA members.

Robert Bolwell, head of the landlord and tenant department at the legal firm Dutton Gregory, will present a webinar on the latest developments in lettings legislation.

Bolwell - who is also head of the Propertymark Legal Helpline - anticipates pets, electrical checks and the ongoing possession restrictions will dominate proceedings. Other key legislative changes including Right to Rent checks and looking beyond the current six month grace period for EU nationals are expected to surface too.

Currently there are two major initiatives to attempt to get more pets into private rental accommodation.

One is the model tenancy introduced by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, which makes acceptance of pets the default position for those landlords who chose to use that tenancy pro forma.

The second is a Private Members Bill going through the House of Commons; it is the Dogs and Domestic Animals (Accommodation and Protection) Bill which has passed its first reading but has yet to be given any time for additional debate.
