Letting agents and landlords in a major city have been requested to see if there is a ‘spare’ four bedroom property that could be made available as an emergency shelter.
The director of homelessness charity Caring in Bristol has written to the city’s rental experts, because there is urgent need of an emergency youth shelter.
A report in the Green Voice online publication says in Bristol, the average number of young people not having a permanent home has risen from 7.1 to 9.6 per cent in 2020 alone.
The four bedroom (or larger) house would become an overnight safe space for those under 25 with no other available housing options and considering a night on the street.
The charity would be the sole tenant, guaranteeing reliable rent, maintenance, health and safety and open communication with the owner and managers. Those seeking sanctuary in the shelter will always be accompanied by two trained adults offering 24/7 housing and wellbeing support.
Ben Richardson, Caring in Bristol director, is quoted as saying: “It is imperative we work alongside our community to provide this safety net for valuable younger members of our society.”
