Many months on from its call for evidence, an influential committee of MPs has still to report on whether it considers enough has been done to help all elements of the private rental sector during the pandemic.
The call for evidence is now so old that its reference to “a second wave of Coronavirus” appears outdated. Back in October the all-party Housing, Communities and Local Government committee issued that call for evidence covering a number of key issues.
It asked:
- How effective has the support provided by the government been in addressing the impact of Covid-19 on tenants, landlords, rough sleepers and the homeless?;
- What might the impact be of a second wave of Coronavirus on homelessness and the private rented sector?;
- What estimates or data are available on the number of eviction notices served during the ban on evictions?;
- What are the best policy options for helping tenants with rent arrears caused by coronavirus?
Submissions were invited up to November 27 but the latest statement from the House of Commons library, earlier this week, suggests the discussions are still ongoing - approaching four months after the call for evidence deadline has expired.

So out of four questions, just one mentions landlords and that is a fleeting reference.
