Airbnb host fined for using domestic recycling facilities

An Airbnb host who let three properties in a city has been fined for using domestic recycling facilities and failing to use a commercial waste service.

The City of York Council prosecuted the host - named in the local media as Neil Cook - saying he was using domestic recycling for the past three years when he was effectively running a business.

Cook, from York, pleaded guilty to carrying waste in the course of a business without registering between October 16 2020 and September 7 2021 - much of this period was after the council had informed him that he required a commercial waste arrangement.

Yahoo News says his solicitor told the court: “He took a couple of bags of rubbish and took them to the household recycling depot. He thought he was doing the right thing. It was on a small number of occasions.”

York magistrates fined Cook £466 and ordered him to pay a £47 statutory surcharge and £200 prosecution costs.

Scott is now reported to have a commercial waste contract in place.
