Huge boost for Airbnb as it's named Commonwealth Games provider

Airbnb has signed what it calls “a landmark agreement” with the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, becoming the official hosting provider for  the event, which begins on July 28.

The Games are expected to attract more than one million spectators to the city from around the world, as well as around 4,500 athletes from 72 Commonwealth nations and territories.

Airbnb and the Birmingham 2022 organisers are encouraging locals from the city and the West Midlands region to welcome the influx of visitors whilst also earning additional income.

A statement from Airbnb claims that home sharing “will contribute to the legacy of Birmingham 2022” by spreading the benefits beyond the hotel sector to communities that guests might otherwise have missed.

The short lets platform says the majority of Birmingham listings on Airbnb are outside of the city centre, suggesting that these are “offering a more local and authentic way for guests to immerse themselves in Birmingham and the surrounding West Midlands.”

“Birmingham 2022 is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the West Midlands and what better way for visitors to experience the region than sharing the home of a local” claims Amanda Cupples, general manager for Airbnb in northern Europe.

She continues: “Since its conception, Airbnb has helped local families afford their homes, and helped cities meet surges in demand around major events, and we are excited to partner with the Games and West Midlands Growth Company to help make Birmingham 2022 a success.”

The partnership comes as Airbnb says that its so-called ‘party ban’ - introduced in 2020 at the height of the pandemic - is now permanent.

The platform claims that there’s been a 63 per cent drop in reports of parties in Airbnb host homes the UK since the temporary ban. Airbnb says it believes the ban has worked to reduce violence, rules violations and health concerns, with worldwide reports of parties at listed properties having dropped 44 per cent and over 6,600 guests suspended last year for staging parties in contravention of rules.

However, at the same time as making the ban permanent Airbnb has scrapped its maximum number of occupants, which was previously 16. This is apparently “based on feedback from a number of hosts who have listings that can house above 16 people comfortably.”
