Tenants today spend 12% longer in the same property before switching, than they did a decade ago.
Analysis of the English Housing Survey shows the average private tenant currently spends 4.3 years in their rental home. This is 12.1% higher than a decade ago when tenants rented for an average of 3.8 years.
By contrast home owners spend an average of 9.2 years in a mortgaged property – some way below the average of 9.9 years seen over the last decade and 13.9% below the figure in 2013.
The tenants’ increase is due to higher rents discouraging shifts between properties according to the firm behind the analysis, Zero Deposit.
