A Labour MP who has previously raised concerns about how letting agents treat tenants is among the frontrunners to chair an influential parliamentary committee that could determine property regulation in the coming years.
Florence Eshalomi has been nominated alongside Shaun Davies to be chair of the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee.
The group of MPs has previously explored issues such as leasehold reform and estate agency regulation.
Eshalomi, an MP since 2019, has shown of interest in the property market in recent years, raising questions about leaseholds, cladding and tenant rights.
In one case last year, she warned of “disgraceful emails” from letting agents to tenants.
She said: “One constituent emailed to say that she had been told to keep requests to a minimum if she wanted to have a chance of getting a property.”
Meanwhile, Davies only became an MP in July after winning the Telford seat, beating the Conservative incumbent Lucy Allan
His nomination statement said his priorities would be tackling housing supply and conditions as well as providing a tenant voice and support regulation.
Eshalomi said she would stand up for “voiceless” communities, adding: “This includes making sure that reforms to our planning system are carried out in a way that enables us to build the houses we need while providing the services that local communities need.”
Both may have some sympathy with landlords and letting agents as they each have a rental property, according to the register of MP’s interests.
The chair will be chosen by MPs in a secret ballot, with elections taking place on 11 September from 10am-4pm.
