The government in the Republic of Ireland is reported to be preparing a crackdown on Airbnb and other short let platforms.

The Irish Examiner newspaper and website report that homeowners are likely to be banned from letting out properties for more than 90 days a year if they live in an area with a population over 10,000.

The Irish government suggests some 10,000 properties nationwide are currently used for short lets could be used for long-term housing. And it’s thought there are some 32,000 short lets advertised on platforms.

The objective of legislation to be introduced over the summer is to stop the permanent short-letting of homes in urban areas.

Owners short letting for over 21 days in a year will have to register with an enforcement body monitoring Airbnb and other platforms to ensure compliance.

The Irish Examiner believes the new restrictions will come into effect in 2026.
