The Renters Rights Bill has now concluded detailed line by line scrutiny in the House of Lords.
It now progresses to the so-called Report Stage.
No date has yet been announced for this, but it’s expected to be a short process – and then it returns to the Commons before being sent for Royal Assent.
So it could become law during June, although some provisions of the Bill may take some months to become effective.
It is thought the government wants the Bill to became law before the first anniversary of Labour’s General Election victory in early July.
Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner stated during the election campaign that Labour would scrap Section 21 eviction powers “immediately” upon taking office.
In recent weeks she is thought to have insisted that Lords work harder to push through the legislation.
A Labour whip’s call to action was left on a printer in the House of Lords, summoning colleagues to “ensure [the] committee stage finishes”.
