Mandatory training and qualifications for agents on the way - government

Agents’ trade body Propertymark says the industry is facing a defining moment with significant housing reforms emerging in every nation, and across lettings and sales.

And it claims that qualifications help safeguard standards, support agents, and protect consumers. As a result, the body is calling on all property professionals “to take proactive steps to upskill and stay ahead of change.”

Propertymark says its flexible online routes and near-24-hour exam access mean agents can truly tailor their study to fit their schedule.

Gary Elliott, Head of Education at Propertymark, comments: “Professional development isn’t just about ticking a compliance box; it’s about building confidence and credibility in every part of the job. The pathways we’ve created make access and progression achievable for everyone, whether you’re new to the industry or an experienced professional expanding or demonstrating your knowledge.

“With the wide range of resources available through Propertymark Learning, agents can gain qualifications and take shorter specialist courses to strengthen their expertise and maintain a professional edge.”

He continues that upcoming housing reforms and enforcement powers across the UK will demand greater knowledge, transparency, and accountability. And that unqualified or unprepared agents risk reputational damage and potential financial penalties for failing to meet evolving legislative requirements.

Conversely, holding a regulated qualification builds trust with clients, landlords, and tenants, positioning agents as reliable professionals in an increasingly competitive and scrutinised market, he claims.
