The Daily Mail’s investigation into the Rachel Reeves rental saga has now revealed the involvement of a second agency.
The paper claims Reeves was warned by a second agent that she needed a licence to let out her family home in Dulwich, south London.
Last week Reeves initially told Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer that she was unaware of the need for a licence. Then emails revealed that her lettings agency – Harvey & Wheeler – had offered to help to secure the appropriate license from Southwark council, but failed to do so.
Now the Mail says Reeves and her husband had initially approached Knight Frank to act as lettings agent – and were warned about the need for the licence.
A Knight Frank spokesperson has told the Mail: “It is standard procedure to notify all clients of their legal and regulatory obligations when letting a property.”
However the Reeves family did not eventually instruct Knight Frank.
When the Mail asked if this was because of the lack of a licence, the spokesman said: “That was not the reason.”
Knight Frank told Letting Agent Today over the weekend that it had no further comment to make.
At the end of last week Reeves conceded it was her responsibility to ensure a Selective Licence was obtained even though Harvey & Wheeler told her it would help.
