A council-run service that competes with mainstream lettings agencies is hosting a forum this month on the Renters Rights Act.

Ashford council’s ABC service is inviting landlords to attend its event on April 24. It’s run in partnership with the National Residential Landlords Association (NRLA).

The event, taking place at the Kent Invicta Chamber of Commerce, will provide an overview of the Renters’ Rights Act (RRA).

ABC Lettings, set up by Ashford council 10 years ago, manages some 200 units across Ashford, Folkestone and Hythe.

ABC claims it offers landlords “a no hassle, no hidden cost lettings service – and all from an organisation which is not motivated by profit and which has a reputation for a careful and considered approach.”

ABC Lettings is inviting suggestions on other topics landlords most want to hear about.

The event will also featureSuzanne Smith, founder of The Independent Landlord, as a guest speaker.

She says: “As a former General Counsel turned portfolio landlord, I founded The Independent Landlord in August 2022 because, when I started out as a landlord, I couldn’t find the clear, practical guidance I was looking for.

“So, I decided to write it myself.

“My blend of legal expertise and hands‑on landlord experience has since established The Independent Landlord as a trusted resource for tens of thousands of landlords and property professionals every week.”

Gareth Harmer, ABC manager, adds: “We know landlords face an ever‑changing landscape, and this is designed to give them the information and support they need.

“By working closely with the NRLA, we aim to deliver a session that’s timely, informative, and genuinely useful for those who provide much‑needed homes in our community.”

Landlords can book their place via Eventbrite
