The value of housing in those areas is clearly higher as holiday accommodation than as C3 housing. That's good for tourism. Why fight it?

Agreed - well put Ingrid. "Why should landlords be forced to become charities?" - you've absolutely hit the nail on the head. It's as 'though landlords haven't suffered financially enough in the last few years! Fortunately the government does appear to recognise the importance of landlords being able to regain possession of their property.

David, I'd be happier if you didn't make these suggestions!

What a bizarrely uninformed professor - I very much hope that he's being misquoted. I can't really believe that a person of that intelligence really blames the rising costs of housing, the causes of which are now myriad, on the people who currently own the properties.

What fantastic news! Combining the resources and lobbying power of these two great organisations will be great for the PRS and therefore for housing in this country.

Individual landlords have been financially hammered over the last few years. Rental controls would push further towards massive reductions in property prices, homeowners in negative equity resulting in repossessions, homelessness, economic recession. We need to move away from the politics of envy, and do more to protect and reward entrepreneurs in all sectors. Pulling the rug out from under investors and business people is not the way to build a healthy economy.

Rather than the slightly unfortunate phrase "helping themselves", Peter means we thought the Conservative party were the party who would support individual property investors who have stepped up to the plate to become responsible landlords, and to make themselves and their families self-supporting, all encouraged (and rightly so) by successive governments. It is amazing to see this government now pulling the rug out from under those landlords' feet, and subjecting the private rental sector to the severe damage that will result. These budget changes should be scrapped or, at the very least, made non-retrospective.
