Broadband comparison website Broadband Genie have this week published the results of their Broadband Switching Survey in which over 2,000 people were asked a number of questions in relation to their broadband service. The survey comes at a key time for the telecoms industry as OFCOM look to introduce new guidelines for switching broadband providers. These new guidelines set to come in to force in only a few days’ time on the 20th June mean that it will make switching service provider a much smoother process for consumers. But what did the Broadband Genie report find and why do we at TenTel think it’s an article worth a WOW from us? Let’s take a look at the headlines: 1. 32% of respondents said they would be more likely to switch provider now that it’s a simpler process 2. 68% said they had no idea what it would cost them if they were to end their contract early 3. 32% have been with their provider for more than 5 years 4. 40% have NEVER switched provider and 21% have only switched provider once! 5. 9% that switched found it to be unsatisfactory as the top three reasons were that it took too long to switch, were left without service and cost more than they expected 6. 46% switched for a better value package, the most popular reason to switch 7. 42% of respondents preferred a 12 month contract length, with 1 month contracts also being popular at 27% So what can you take away from this research? Well one thing’s for sure and that’s the fact that consumers still believe it’s difficult to switch provider, but with providers such as TenTel and comparison sites such as Broadband Genie, and with the new guidelines for switching imposed by OFCOM, switching provider has never been easier and that’s only going to continue to improve. Rob Hilborn, Head of Strategy at Broadband Genie, says: "The UK broadband market is highly competitive, and yet in spite of this, there still seems to be an uncertainty when it comes to switching providers. Of those surveyed 40% have never switched ISPs." "However, the new broadband switching rules which make the process of switching simpler could reduce this uncertainty and persuade more than 7 million broadband users to swap providers. Those looking to switch could end up going with a provider that offers broadband with a more flexible contract, as 27% of respondents in our survey said they preferred broadband with a contract no longer than 1 month." "Whilst shorter term offers may not necessarily offer the cheapest deal, they certainly have their benefits, in particular for students and temporary workers where committing to a long contract isn't ideal and could end up being expensive if they need to pay an early get out fee."
