All statistics are based on rental properties advertised on Lettingweb, which run into the hundreds of thousands over the past decade; however weekly sample sizes are often much smaller. As more data is accumulated we intend to provide further UK-wide reports.

Flats for rent in Aberdeen
It is perhaps not surprising – considering its status as one of the oil capitals of the world – that Aberdeen still tops the list for rental prices, with one-bed flats coming in at an average of £550 a month. This equates to a more than 6% increase on the average rental price of £518 for the same period in 2011.

The average time taken to let a one-bed flat has decreased dramatically in the year since May 2011 however, down from 28 days to 2 days.

Flats for rent in Edinburgh
On the other hand, the capital city has seen an increase in average rental prices, with one-bed flats averaging £533 a month as opposed to £536 for the same period in 2011; two-bed flats showing a staggering 10% drop from £686 to £615 a month; three-beds dropping £6 to £1050 a month; and four-beds decreasing in price by almost £100, from £1452 to £1355.

However, the average time taken to let decreased dramatically for all properties. One-, two- and three-beds took 2 days to let (as opposed to 28, 26 and 27 days respectively in 2011), and four-beds took three days as opposed to 21 in 2011.

Flats for rent in Glasgow
Glasgow continues the trend shown in Edinburgh, with one-bed rentals decreasing from an average of £460 a month in 2011 to £417 a month (a dramatic decrease of more than 9%); two-beds dropping 3% in price to £574; and four-beds dropping a huge 20% in price during the year, from an average of £1128 a month to £895 a month. Three-beds, however, bucked the trend, showing a 68% increase in rental price per month from £741 to £1250.

The average time taken to let decreased dramatically as throughout the rest of Scotland’s major cities, with an average of one day taken to let all sizes of flats; this compares to 33, 34, 42 and 45 days for one-,two-, three- and four-beds respectively during the same period in 2011.
