A new fighting fund has been launched against criminal landlords of ‘beds in sheds’.

Housing minister Grant Shapps has allocated £1.8m to areas blighted by the problems, and appealed to councils not to turn a blind eye.

‘Beds in sheds’ are often rented to migrants, including some with no right to be in the UK, at extortionate rates, and offering appalling conditions.

Shapps said the money would help the worst affected councils – Brent, Ealing, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Newham, Peterborough, Redbridge, Slough and Southwark.

Shapps said: “I’m determined to flush out criminal landlords who think they can make an easy buck from cramped, cockroach-ridden outhouses. The scandal of beds in sheds must come to an end.

“In the 21st century it simply isn’t acceptable that people should be forced to live in such squalid and unsanitary conditions. That’s why I’ve allocated £1.8m to help councils in the worst affected areas crack down on this cruel exploitation.”

My Wife lived in Southall in the 70's; there were converted garages and sheds in the back gardens back then with people living in them. There is no news here.

@B1 - No dont chuck them out on the streets - send them home on the basis we have nowhere for you to live. We can then have the 1.8 M quid for something real usefull like employing a proper housing minister from the private sector instead of this dipstick who is clueless. At the going rate for bankers we could get anything up to a 6 months worth of a qualified person to do the job.
