There is a growing supply crisis in Scotland's private rental sector which has pushed up rents by 8.6 per cent during the year to September.

The figures come from Lettingstats, an arm of portal Lettingweb.

Whilst these figures do cover a period including the Commonwealth Games and the busy summer lettings period, this looks like a significant movement in rent levels. It's clear that for many prospective tenants there is simply not enough rented property on the market according to Dan Cookson, Lettingstats' head of research.

A breakdown of the rent increase shows three urban hotspots - Glasgow, where a typical two-bed property is £680 pcm after a whopping 11.6 per cent rise in the year to September, while in Edinburgh the rent for a comparable property is £826, up 9.8 per cent, while Aberdeen is predictably the most expensive on £989 pcm, up 9.2 per cent.

For potential investors, Scotland remains a strong market - by 2037 it requires an additional 88,000 households in the private rental sector to meet demand, says Lettingstats.
