A government task force to combat problems caused by rogue landlords has never met, even once, in its two years of existence, according to housing minister Brandon Lewis.

The Department of Communities and Local Government launched the proposal in early 2013.

Although there have been several non-government initiatives since that time - chiefly the introduction of landlord licensing in many areas - the official national body set up by the coalition has never been convened.

In a parliamentary answer, Lewis says that not only has the task force not met and that its predecessor group to tackle private rental sector problems - set up by a former housing minister, Grant Shapps, in 2012 - had met only three times.

In 2013 another former housing minister - one-time Knight Frank employee Mark Prisk - described the problem of rogue landlords in the private sector as unacceptable and claimed they sought to exploit vulnerable people often living in squalid conditions.
