Not everyone living in social housing is suffering by being out of work.
New statistics from the Communities and Local Government department have revealed that around 5000 people earning £100,000 per year are in social housing.
It wants to change regulations so landlords can charge a fair market rent once tenants earn above £60,000 per year.
Around 21,000 in social housing are thought to earn above this figure currently.
Communities Secretary Eric Pickles said: "We intend to give landlords the option to charge very high-earning social tenants a fair level of rent. If the tenants want to continue using this precious national resource they will pay a fair price for the privilege."

As a landlord how do I get to find out what my tenants are earning Do I just keep credit referencing them and pounce as soon as they have a big pay rise It is up to the councils to keep their own house in order and landlords should be compensated if they are accepting low rents for no good reason. Councils are always wanting to put everyone else's house in order with their licensing and so on.
Some time ago I read that letting at a discount will create a tax liability as the tenant could be said to be benefiting financially. This liability would of course be payable by the landlord and not the tenant just in case the tenant was below the tax thresh holds.
Social tenants = council property.
A recent example is Bob Crow, the general secretary of the RMT union behind London's tube strikes, who said he had 'no moral duty' to leave his council house despite now earning 145,000 a year.
'I was born in a council house, as far as Im concerned I will die in one,' he told a radio interview in November.
Yes I could buy my own place but why dont you ask the rest of my family who live at home with me whether they should have to move as well he said.
Why is it just down to me to buy a house Why should my family who have lived there for 30 years, with all the friends theyve got, have to move because of the job Ive got
If I moved out of my house tomorrow the first thing youd say is Comrade Crow leaves his roots.
Are you serious Social tenants earning +100k
Beggers belief - what with the housing shortage
Very high earning social tenants What on earth is going on with the UK
Surely if they are high earning, they should not be social tenants
