Mystery continues to surround the alleged disappearance of £400,000 paid to London Housing Solutions, an agency specialising in matching homes to let with tenants claiming benefits.

London Housing Solutions has reportedly gone into administration but owes tenants' rent to at least 100 landlords; however, an off-shoot company called Local Housing Solutions has taken responsibility for the tenancies but claims not to know the whereabouts of the missing money.

In 2013 the two firms managed over 700 properties between them around London and south east England.

The London Housing Solutions website (www.londonhousingsolutions.com) is now almost blank and contains only the words: London Housing Solutions Ltd. For information call 020 3587 7670. When called repeatedly by LAT, the telephone number merely produces an automated message saying The person you are trying to reach is unavailable.

Online searches for Local Housing Solutions lead to the website www.dsslocal.com which says: LHS are looking for flats and houses in all London borough for our leasing scheme and speaks of benefits of its services, including an ethical investment in social housing.

Both companies offered landlords a guaranteed rent scheme on properties which the firms manage for three to five years.

Darren Saunders, the owner of London Housing Solutions since November last year, has told Channel 4 News that he has contacted local authorities asking them to stop making payments. "I believe by me stepping in I've stopped it getting worse. I've taken over the company, very quickly seen how bad it is and said to all the councils, please do not pay me this money. Do not pay money into this account" he says.
