A landlord in a long-running dispute with a local council over the value of his property says the authority may have been systematically under-valuing hundreds of homes.

A valuation of landlord Martin Reeves's property by Hull council was carried out two years ago and he received an offer in writing in October 2012 for £25,000. That was rejected and it was then increased to £40,000 - now Reeves is questioning why there is such a large discrepancy in the offers.

"Unfortunately, the only conclusion I could derive from this was that either the council was attempting to acquire my property at under value or their preferred surveyor was incompetent. I followed this up throughout last year by providing a range of evidence in support of our claim, ranging from physical sales of our own properties, all of which were sold around or above £50,000, plus evidence from Rightmove, Zoopla and Land Registry Reeves has told a local newspaper in Hull.

Eventually, Reeve instructed his own surveyor, who valued the home at £60,000.

Hull Council is regenerating the west Hull area where the house is located; there has so far been no resolution of the dispute.
