The number of people claiming housing benefit in May was just over 5m, says the Department of Work and Pensions.

The figure of 5,072,264 was up by over 10,000 on April’s figures, and up by 40,526 on May 2012.

Most of May’s claimants (3.39m) were in the social rented section, but 1.68m were renting privately, almost all receiving Local Housing Allowance.
