NLA throws open free membership to all UK landlords

The National Landlords Association is making some of its key membership benefits freely available online to every single landlord in the UK.

The documents include tenancy agreements, referencing letters and various Section notices.

Landlords in the UK who use the service will have to register first as associate members of the NLA.

Launching this new category – effectively offering free membership to all landlords in the UK – is a strategic move for the NLA.

While designed to give the NLA further presence and muscle-power in the market, as well as act as a recruiting tool for paid-categories and its training courses, there is the danger it could backfire with some members who currently pay to belong deciding that free access to documentation is sufficient for their needs.

The NLA currently claims some 20,000 members.

David Salusbury, NLA chairman, said: “Letting property is a big responsibility: landlords are dealing with people’s homes, a whole raft of housing legislation and day to day maintenance. It is essential that they know what they are doing before they dive in and that they comply with the law and best practice once they do.

“Offering landlords in the UK access to best practice tenancy agreements and other necessary forms is a great way for a landlord to begin to run their businesses properly.”

The NLA – which last week announced that it is to make its members go through an accreditation process – has announced a number of other new membership categories.

The full list of new membership categories is: landlord associate (the free membership category); basic membership £50, or £80 if you include tax investigation insurance); full individual membership, £89 for an annual subscription if you pay by direct debit; family membership, £110; and business membership, £160.
